The
Galactic Center in Infrared Credit: 2MASS
Project, UMass, IPAC/Caltech, NSF, NASA - Explanation: The center of our
Galaxy is a busy place. In visible light, much of the Galactic Center is
obscured by opaque dust. In infrared light, however, dust glows more and
obscures less, allowing nearly one million stars to be recorded in the above
photograph. The Galactic Center itself appears on the right and is located
about 30,000 light years away towards the constellation of Sagittarius. The
Galactic Plane of our Milky Way Galaxy, the plane in which the Sun orbits,
is identifiable by the dark diagonal dust lane. The absorbing dust grains
are created in the atmospheres of cool red-giant stars and grow in molecular
clouds. The region directly surrounding the Galactic Center glows brightly
in radio and high-energy radiation, and is thought to house a large black
hole. Authors & editors: Robert Nemiroff (MTU) & Jerry Bonnell (USRA)

Powder
Keg BMW Films - Soldiers patrol fields in a rural village. Their mission:
Find a photojournalist who has snapped a picture certain to unite the world
against their leader. Alejandro González Iñárritu directs
Clive Owen as the photographer’s driver and only hope of getting him and
his film beyond the strongly guarded border. Running time: 8 minutes, 15
seconds. Parents strongly cautioned. Contains violence and offensive language.
360° Tour - Beside Soufrière Bay Dominica, Caribbean The Nature Island: You are
standing in the tranquil village of Soufrière, on the Lesser Antilles
island of Dominica. Set on the shores of palm-fringed Soufrière Bay,
the tidy village with its old stone church is typical of Dominica's unpretentious
charm. Unlike more developed resort islands just a hop away, Dominica is
still blissfully unspoiled. Superb diving and whale-watching opportunities
make Soufrière a perfect base for exploration.
Moonlight,
Mars, and Milky Way Credit & Copyright: Barney Magrath. Explanation:
Aloha and welcome to a breath-taking skyscape. In this celestial scene, a
four day old Moon illuminates a dreamlike foreground while bright planet Mars
(above center) rules and the Milky Way's cosmic clouds of stars and dust
seem to stretch from horizon to horizon. The picture was taken on May 27th
from what may be the best amateur astronomy observing site on planet Earth,
near the Mauna Kea, Hawai'i Visitor Center, 9,600 feet above sea level. Remarkable
in the volcanic foreground are moonlit clouds and an "ahu hoku" - a star
marker or star altar - built up of rocks topped with a white piece of coral
gently glowing in the moonlight. Now near its closest approach in 13 years,
Mars still lingers between the Milky Way constellations of Sagittarius and
Scorpius. High above the horizon by midnight, the Red Planet is exceptionally
well placed for earthdwellers to admire it. Astrophotographer Barney Magrath
comments that this splendid sky view represents one of the joys of photography
itself. When making the time exposure he did not realize that the ahu hoku
would become such a beautiful element in his celestial composition. Authors

Moses vs.
Godzilla - Hold onto your hats because the biggest movie in years
is coming your way. Not since the heyday of Irwin Allen has there been a
movie preview with as much spectacle as "Moses Vs. Godzilla." SEE Moses and
Rameses square off with ghastly dialogue. THRILL as the seven plagues rush
through Egypt. LAUGH as things just get ridiculous. CLICK the link to your
left to see it all right before your eyes.
NGC
3132: The Eight Burst Nebula Credit:
Hubble Heritage Team (AURA/STScI /NASA) Explanation: It's the dim star, not
the bright one, near the center of NGC 3132 that created this odd but beautiful
planetary nebula. Nicknamed the Eight-Burst Nebula and the Southern Ring
Nebula, the glowing gas originated in the outer layers of a star like our
Sun. In this representative color picture, the hot blue pool of light seen
surrounding this binary system is energized by the hot surface of the faint
star. Although photographed to explore unusual symmetries, it's the asymmetries
that help make this planetary nebula so intriguing. Neither the unusual shape
of the surrounding cooler shell nor the structure and placements of the cool
filamentary dust lanes running across NGC 3132 are well understood. Authors

Carts (2000) Running Time: 2 minutes Genre: Comedy - The fact that the would-be
lovers in this two-minute fairy tale happen to be shopping carts takes nothing
away from their struggle to overcome the odds to be together. And what a
struggle it is. After finding one another across a crowded parking lot, a
renegade suitor makes a daring and brutal attempt to steal our heroine away
from her beau. What follows is the strongest shopping-cart comedy ever captured
on film.
Messiers
and Mars (Large
Version!) Credit & Copyright: Michael
Cole Explanation: A telescopic tour of the constellation Sagittarius offers
the many bright clusters and nebulae of dimensioned space in a starscape surrounding
the galactic center. This gorgeous color deep-sky photograph visits two such
lovely sights, cataloged by the 18th century cosmic tourist Charles Messier
as M8 and M20. M20 (upper left), the Trifid Nebula, presents a striking contrast
in red/blue colors and dark dust lanes. Just below and to the right is the
expansive, alluring red glow of M8, the Lagoon Nebula. Both nebulae are a
few thousand light-years distant but at the far right, the dominant celestial
beacon is a "local" source, the planet Mars. Just passing through Sagittarius
and strongly overexposed in this picture, the Red Planet is a short 4 light-minutes
away. Now near its closest approach to planet Earth since 1988, Mars rises
around sunset and can be seen for most of the night shining brightly at about
-2.3 magnitude. Urban imager Michael Cole recorded this photograph at 3:00
AM on May 20th in clear skies over Camp Hancock, Oregon, USA. Authors &

360° Tour
Banff's emerald beauty Lake Louise, Canada - Lake Louise: You're
standing on the edge of Lake Louise in Banff National Park, the heart of
the rugged Canadian Rockies. The setting is at once magical and incongruous:
Mirrored in the lake's turquoise waters are the glacier-draped Mount Victoria
and the rocky bulwark, Fairview Mountain. Surveying this scene with old-world
majesty is one of the most luxurious and elegant hotels in all of Canada,
Chateau Lake Louise. Expedia.
Film Club (2000)
Running Time: 6 minutes Director: Chris LaMont Producers: Golan Ramras, Steven
Brink Genre: Comedy.
To break the rules you have to know the rules -- but damn, "Film Club" just
has so many. This satire of the Brad Pitt/Edward Norton film "Fight Club"
is loaded with quick jokes and plenty of digs at the behemoth known as the
film industry. And you may just have to watch it twice to get all the references.
Close-up
of the Face on Mars (Large
Version) Credit: Malin Space Science Systems, MGS, JPL, NASA - Explanation:
Wouldn't it be fun if clouds were turtles? Wouldn't it be fun if the laundry
on the bedroom chair was a friendly monster? Wouldn't it be fun if rock mesas
on Mars were faces or interplanetary monuments? Clouds, though, are small
water droplets, floating on air. Laundry is cotton, wool, or plastic, woven
into garments. Famous Martian rock mesas known by names like the Face on
Mars appear quite natural when seen more clearly, as the above recently released
photo shows. Is reality boring? Nobody knows how clouds make lightning. Nobody
knows the geological history of Mars. Nobody knows why the laundry on the
bedroom chair smells like root beer. Understanding reality brings more questions.
Mystery and adventure are never far behind. Perhaps fun and discovery are
just beginning. Authors & editors: Robert Nemiroff (MTU) & Jerry

Saturn
The Giant Credit: NASA - Explanation: Forty years ago today (May 25,
1961) U.S. president John Kennedy announced the goal of landing Americans
on the Moon by the end of the decade. Kennedy's ambitious speech triggered
a nearly unprecedented peacetime technological mobilization and one result
was the Saturn V moon rocket. Its development directed by rocket pioneer Wernher
Von Braun, the three stage Saturn V stood over 36 stories tall. It had a
cluster of five first stage engines fueled by liquid oxygen and kerosene
which together were capable of producing 7.5 million pounds of thrust. Giant
Saturn V rockets ultimately hurled nine Apollo missions to the Moon and back
again with six landing on the lunar surface. The first landing, by Apollo
11, occurred on July 20, 1969 achieving Kennedy's goal. Bathed in light,
this Saturn V awaits an April 11, 1970 launch on the third lunar landing
mission, Apollo 13. Authors & editors: Robert Nemiroff (MTU) & Jerry
