The
Monkey Face at Smith Rock, - Kerry
L. Thalmann - PhototripUSA - This scene perfectly illustrates the diversity
of Northwest scenery. Although located in Central Oregon, Smith Rock State
Park looks more like the redrock country of Southern Utah than the mental
image most people conjure up when thinking of Oregon. The formation on the
left is called the monkey face.
March
of the Planets Credit and Copyright: Rick Scott - A four-planet
"hockey stick" array. Mercury, closest to the horizon and immersed
in fading sunlight, is easily visible between silhouetted clouds. To the
left and up in the deepening blue is Jupiter with a brilliant Venus above
and Saturn shining in the darkened sky near the top of the image. LHEA

Larch
Trees and Inspiration Lake Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area, WA, - Kerry
L. Thalmann -PhotoTripUSA, - The larch grows in small pockets amidst the
granite peaks and clear mountain lakes near the 7000' level of the Cascade
Mountains in Central Washington. This is a harsh mountain environment that
remains under snow much of the year. Although photographed in October,
the snow in this image remains from the previous winter, and the first
snowfall for the upcoming winter is only a couple days away.

Chamaeleon Sky Credit: FORS Team, 8.2-meter VLT Antu, ESO. A photogenic
group of nebulae can be found in Chamaeleon, a constellation visible predominantly
in skies south of the Earth's equator. LHEA at NASA/ GSFC & Michigan

Million Miles From Io Credit: Voyager
Project, JPL, NASA This sharp picture of moon Io against a background of
gas giant Jupiter's diffuse swirling cloud bands was recorded by Voyager's
camera from a distance of about 5 million miles. LHEA at NASA/ GSFC &

A
Jupiter-Venus Conjunction Credit & Copyright: T. Polakis Explanation:
Visible in the above photograph are actually five planets. The faint dot
near the top is Saturn. Venus is the brightest spot near the center, and
Jupiter is just above it. Perhaps the hardest to see is Mercury, visible
below Venus but above the foreground Earth. A single line nearly connects
all the planets, a result of all planets orbiting the Sun in a single.
